Functional Capacity Exams

At LHMPTI, we’re committed to helping individuals, employers, case managers, and healthcare providers make informed decisions about work readiness and functional abilities following injury or illness. Our Functional Capacity Exams (FCEs), offered at select LHMPTI clinics, provide comprehensive, evidence-based evaluations that objectively measure an individual’s physical capabilities in relation to the demands of their job.

What is a Functional Capacity Exam?

A Functional Capacity Exam (FCE) is a detailed, standardized evaluation that assesses an individual’s physical strength, flexibility, endurance, and functional abilities required to perform specific work-related tasks. These assessments are designed to answer key questions such as:

  • Can the individual safely return to their previous job?
  • What physical limitations should be considered for modified or alternative work?
  • Is the person capable of sustaining work over a typical workday or workweek?
  • What accommodations, if any, are needed for a successful return to work?

What to Expect During an FCE

Our FCEs are administered by experienced licensed physical therapists trained in functional testing.

The length of an FCE can vary depending on the referral request, typically ranging from 2 to 4 hours. A comprehensive report is provided to the referring physician, case manager, employer, or attorney, as applicable.

Each exam is tailored to the individual and typically includes:

Musculoskeletal screening - evaluates joint mobility, muscle strength, and flexibility
Functional testing - assesses tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, and other job-specific activities
Endurance evaluation - measures how well the individual tolerates sustained physical activity over time
Consistency of the effort and reliability testing - if applicable, testing is aligned with the essential functions of the individual's job description

Who Benefits from an FCE?

An FCE can be beneficial in a variety of situations, including:
