LSVT BIG® Physical Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease

Move Bigger. Move With More Confidence.

When movement starts to feel smaller, slower, or less steady, every day tasks can take more effort than they used to. Walking across a room, standing up from a chair, buttoning a shirt, or keeping your balance may feel different, even though you are trying to move the sam way you always have.

LSVT BIG® physical therapy is designed to help people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological movement challenges practice larger, more intentional movement for daily life. At LHM Physical Therapy Institute, our goal is to help you move with more confidence, more awareness, and a plan that fits your goals.

What is LSVT BIG Physical Therapy?

LSVT BIG is a physical or occupational therapy program created for people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. It focuses on helping people practice bigger, more typical-sized movements during walking, balance tasks, self-care, and everyday activities. Parkinson’s can make movement smaller or slower without you realizing it. LSVT BIG helps train your body and brain to recognize, practice, and use larger movements in real life.

Who Can Benefit from LSVT BIG?

LSVT BIG is most often used for people living with Parkinson’s disease, but a certified LSVT clinician may adapt the program for individuals with other neurological movement challenges.

A physical therapist can evaluate your movement, symptoms, safety, and goals to determine whether LSVT BIG is appropriate for you.

You may want to ask about LSVT BIG if you or someone you care for has noticed:

 Smaller steps or slower walking
 Less arm swinging while walking
 Stooped posture
Trouble getting out of a chair
Balance changes or fear of falling
Difficulty turning, stepping, or starting movement
Smaller handwriting or trouble with buttons
More effort with dressing, getting in bed, or moving around the house

How LSVT BIG Helps With Parkinson’s-Related Movement Changes

Parkinson’s disease can affect movement in ways that are not always easy to notice from the inside. Steps may become smaller, movement may slow down, posture may change, and everyday tasks like standing from a chair, turning, dressing, or walking through the house may start to feel less automatic.

LSVT BIG is designed to help people practice bigger, more confident movement during the tasks that matter most. Depending on your evaluation and goals, treatment may focus on walking with bigger steps, improving arm swing, standing up from chairs, getting in and out of bed, turning safely, improving balance during daily movement, using your hands for self-care tasks, improving posture and trunk movement, and building confidence at home and in the community.

What to Expect During LSVT BIG Treatment

A One-on-One, Intensive Program

LSVT BIG is typically delivered as an intensive one-on-one treatment program, consisting of one-hour sessions, four sessions per week, for four weeks in a row, along with daily homework and carryover exercises.

Because this schedule is more intensive than many traditional therapy plans, your therapist will talk with you about your goals, your current movement, your safety, and what level of participation is appropriate.

Daily Practice and Carryover Exercises

The work does not only happen in the clinic. LSVT BIG includes daily practice and carryover exercises so you can learn to use bigger movements during real daily activities. That might mean practicing how you stand from your favorite chair, walk through your home, button a shirt, or move more confidently in the grocery store.

Movement That Connects to Real Life

The program is standardized, but it is not one-size-fits-all. LSVT BIG is tailored to each person’s abilities and goals while still following the researched treatment principles.

At LHMPTI, that matters because your goals are personal. For one person, the goal may be walking with more confidence. For another, it may be getting out of a chair safely, staying active with family, or feeling more steady in the community.

When Should You Ask About LSVT BIG?

You do not have to wait until movement changes become severe to ask about therapy. LSVT BIG may be especially useful in early or middle stages of Parkinson’s disease. However, people with more advanced symptoms may still benefit depending on their situation.

If symptoms are sudden, severe, worsening quickly, or connected with new weakness, falls, chest pain, confusion, or other urgent changes, contact a medical professional promptly.

Consider asking about LSVT BIG if:

You have Parkinson's disease and want to stay proactive
Family members have noticed changes in your posture, walking, or balance
You feel less steady during everyday movement
You want a structured plan for maintaining independence
You are a caregiver looking for therapy options for a loved one
You want support from a physical therapist trained in neurological movement care
